## Article

The generational shift in association membership is no longer a future-planning slide. The 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report puts Millennials at 25% of membership and Gen Z at 11%, while the Baby Boomer share has fallen over the longer trend line.

Those numbers come from a US association survey. They do not tell an Australian association precisely what to build, and they certainly do not mean that every member under forty wants the same thing. They do make it harder to defend a member experience designed around a single, assumed career stage.

## Career stage is more useful than a generational label

An early-career member may need a clear professional pathway, affordable events, a first credential or a way to meet people in their field. A more established member may value leadership, specialist learning, a committee role or a way to make their expertise visible.

The common problem is not a lack of offerings. It is making the right route obvious without giving staff a new set of manual lists to maintain.

[Agend CMS](/cms) can personalise content according to the attributes an association already holds: membership type, location, status, purchase history and role. In short, one website page can have a different and relevant next step for a student member, a fellow and a prospective member. It is not about making the website clever for its own sake. It is about helping people find the thing they joined for.

## Build a pathway, not a pile of benefits

Younger-professionals programmes often become a list: discounted membership, a networking night, perhaps a newsletter. A pathway is more useful. It can connect a first event to a course, a course to CPD, and a discussion group to a mentor or committee.

[Learn](/learn) can organise courses into learning paths, track progress and award CPD points and certificates on completion. [Events](/events) can apply the member rate automatically and return attendance to the same profile. [Loop](/loop) can give a course cohort, branch or committee its own place to talk, vote and work on documents.

The member does not need to think about the product boundaries. They should simply see that the event they attended, the course they completed and the conversation they joined belong to the same association relationship.

## Avoid the false choice

There is a slightly unhelpful way of framing this work: younger members versus established members. Associations have to serve both, and the useful question is whether the platform can recognise the difference without making either group feel like an afterthought.

Start with one audience and one outcome. For example: help new practitioners complete their first three CPD activities, or introduce regional early-career members to the next local event. Test the route, ask for feedback, and change it as you learn. That is more sustainable than launching a large programme with no way to see whether members use it.
