## Article

Most associations welcome new members. The 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report found that 89% send welcome emails. That is a good start, and it is probably why most new members will tell you they were welcomed.

The more interesting number comes later: 14% of respondents reported no structured first-year touchpoints. Only 24% reported a 30-day check-in. A welcome is a moment; onboarding is the work of helping a person find their place over time.

Again, this is research from US association professionals, so it should be used as a prompt rather than a local forecast. The pattern will be recognisable to plenty of Australian membership teams: someone joins, receives a pleasant email, then has to work out for themselves which event, course, community or resource actually matters to them.

## Start with the reason they joined

There is no single ideal first 90 days. A student, a regional practitioner, a corporate-seat holder and a fellow might have joined for very different reasons. The useful approach is to make the next step relevant without requiring the team to maintain a series of separate lists by hand.

That could look like this:

- Day 0 - confirm the membership, explain the account and point to one useful first action.
- Day 7 - introduce a nearby event, a learning path or the relevant member group.
- Day 30 - ask whether they found what they came for, then offer the next sensible option.
- Day 60 - show progress, such as an event attended, a certificate earned or a profile completed.
- Before first renewal - make the value of the year visible, not merely the amount due.

The sequence is only useful if it is connected to what the member actually does. With [Agend CRM](/crm), the record can hold membership details alongside course completions, event attendance, payments and conversations. [Workflows](/workflows) can provide the timing, but staff still decide the rule and handle the exceptions.

## Make the website part of onboarding

New members do not experience a welcome programme only through email. They return to the website, look for events, check a course catalogue and sometimes wonder whether they are signed in at all.

[Agend CMS](/cms) lets the same URL show different material according to membership type, location, status, purchase history and role. In essence, a new student member can be shown the student pathway while an established professional sees a different route, without publishing duplicate pages for each audience. The same sign-in can continue through the website, portal and learning.

That makes the website less like a brochure and more like a useful front door. It can put [Events](/events), [Learn](/learn) and [Loop](/loop) in the member's path at the moment they are most likely to need them.

## Measure the hand-off, not just the email open

It is tempting to judge onboarding by the open rate of the welcome email. A better set of questions is slightly more awkward, but much more useful:

- Did the new member complete an action that relates to why they joined?
- Did their next visit recognise who they were?
- Did staff have to fix a problem created by a disconnected system?

That is where a shared member record changes the work. The team is able to see the first 90 days as a journey rather than a handful of campaigns with no common history.
