## Article

Non-dues revenue is sometimes discussed as if it is a separate commercial project that happens somewhere beside membership. In reality, the more durable revenue lines tend to be tied to a real member need: a good event, a credible course, a professional listing people can find, or a job board relevant to the sector.

The 2026 Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report puts average revenue from events at 17% and sponsorship or advertising at 11%. Education and training is 6%. These are figures from a US survey and should not be used to predict an Australian association's budget. They are still useful for a board conversation because they show how far the association revenue picture can extend beyond membership dues.

## Start with a service worth paying for

The order matters. A job board that is merely a free noticeboard will struggle to become a revenue line. A directory that is out of date is not useful to members or the public. A course people cannot access or prove does not become more valuable because it has a checkout attached.

[Agend Events](/events) connects ticketing, member pricing, waitlists, attendance and Xero mapping. [Agend Learn](/learn) supports paid courses, corporate seat licences and automatic enrolment after payment. Both make the transaction part of the existing member relationship rather than a second merchant setup and a separate contact list.

## Let membership still matter

Membership can provide a meaningful advantage without making every surface free. A current member might receive the applicable event price automatically, a corporate employer might receive a job-posting allocation, or a directory listing might remain current because it follows membership status.

[Agend Jobs](/jobs) uses credits for employer postings, with organisations able to set quotas through membership tiers and sell additional credits through Stripe. [Directory](/directory) can publish current member listings, including sponsor levels and featured placement, while suspending a listing when membership lapses beyond the configured grace period.

The common thread is the [CRM](/crm) record. It knows the contact, company, membership tier, payment history and activity. That does not mean every association should turn every benefit into an upsell. It means the team can offer the appropriate price or entitlement without asking staff to maintain a parallel commercial database.

## A sensible board question

Rather than asking, "what else can we sell?", try this: which member need do we already solve manually, poorly or with a disconnected vendor? The answer might be professional visibility, recruitment, education or an annual conference. Then ask whether the service can support itself while making membership more useful.

That is a calmer way to assess non-dues revenue. It keeps the association's purpose in view and makes the resulting operations much easier to explain.

The broader connected model is explained on [Agend AMS](/ams).
